A Makeup Artist Swapped Her Beautyblender for a Tomato—No, Really

by Martha Adams

Look, Beautyblenders can be expensive. The egg-shaped makeup sponges typically cost about $20 , and you have to keep them clean so they stay in good shape. So makeup artist Atreona Willis found a pretty cheap alternative: a tomato . Yes, like the fruit. Willis, who's known as @curvy_cartel on Instagram, recently challenged herself to apply her foundation and blend her concealer with a Roma tomato. And it actually worked—her makeup looks flawless at the end of the video .

"In this video, I applied my foundation with a Roma tomato and also blended out my concealer with it," she wrote alongside the video on Instagram. "I must say it applied a lot better than I imagined it would…If I had to do this challenge again, I would definitely use a smaller tomato. If you decide to do this challenge then TAG ME, SO I don't miss it!!" So if you're planning to try the tomato challenge, maybe go for a box of small cherry tomatoes. (Plus, you'll have some left over to snack on.)

She also has some great words for Internet trolls who judge MUAs for trying out unique beauty hacks. "Everyday when I'm scrolling on social media I see people saying the most hateful things on someone else's post!…It's sad that people would rather spread hate than love in a world where none of this is real!" she wrote. "At the end of the day, MAKEUP IS A FORM OF ART, and whether or not you respect the process, it takes time to sit down, record and then edit!…It can take hours/days for content to be created just so some of you TROLLS can be entertained…If you don't like something, KEEP SCROLLING. I promise it won't hurt that creator's feelings…If someone wants to beat THEIR FACE with a condom or a [washing] machine or their favorite chocolate cake then LET THEM LIVE."

And speaking of applying makeup with things like condoms and chocolate cake, Willis is not the first makeup artist to try applying makeup with an unexpected tool. YouTuber Laila Tahri pioneered the movement of covering your Beautyblender with a condom , vlogger Ashley Blue DeFrancesco tried blending her makeup with a tampon , and YouTuber Bunny Meyer attempted to curl her hair with marshmallows , Cheetos , and tampons .

Check out Willis's original video, below. And get to snacking blending.
